Phil Hellmuth's Grand Entrance And Exit From 2010 WSOP Main Event
July 8, 2010 9:03 amThe 1989 WSOP Main Event winner Phil Hellmuth has been making a grand entrance at WSOP Main Events, since his sponsor Ultimatebet arranged for him to turn up to the 2007 tournament in an Ultimatebet race car, escorted by 11 gorgeous models signifying his 11 WSOP wins.
Despite losing control of the vehicle, crashing it in the parking lot of the Rio All Suite Hotel and Casino and then turning up two hours late for the tournament, a tradition was born and Phil Hellmuth has been turning heads at the start of the competition ever since.
In 2008, Hellmuth arrived as head of a military convoy dressed in all the related soldierly paraphernalia, and by 2009 he appeared at the Main Event dressed as Caesar, surrounded by a troupe of female gladiators, muses and trumpeters sprinkling rose petals in his path.
Almost as anticipated now as the Main Event itself, or so he’d imagine, Phil Hellmuth showed up at this year’s tournament wearing a mixed-martial-arts fighter outfit, complete with a black robe, gloves and of course 11 beautiful models in tow.
Announcing his entrance, Bruce Buffer declared; “He’s been crushing egos ever since he won his first bracelet in 1989. He’s loved by many, hated by many more and admired by everyone.”
Although it is all mostly taken in good spirits, Hellmuth’s antics are not to the taste of everyone, his most vociferous detractor of all being none other than poker legend himself Doyle Brunson, who expressed relief he hadn’t entered the tournament on the same day as Hellmuth.
Giving a rare insight into how he comes up with the themes for his grand entrances, Hellmuth explained; “We throw these ideas around and someone was like ‘MMA fighter. I said, ‘OK, cool,’ and we went with it.”
Hellmuth has confessed in the past to drawing extra strength from his costumes and declared in 2009; “When you dress as Caesar you actually feel more powerful.” That year he finished 436th out of 6494 entries for a $25,027 pay-out, so that may or may not be true.
This year Hellmuth’s sportiest number yet may have signified his strong belief that he was close to being in the best poker form of his career ever. “I’m at the peak of my powers.” Hellmuth declared. “I don’t know if I’m at the very peak, but I’m close.”
Six hours later, Hellmuth suffered a knock-out after running a pocket pair of J’s into his opponent’s Q’s. Unlucky Phil, even the greats can still get caught by a sucker punch!
