Wilson Calixto Captures 2014 BSOP Main Event For $420k
December 5, 2014 2:12 pmIf anyone needed any evidence poker is booming in Brazil, then one need only take a quick glance at the nine-day Brazilian Series of Poker (BSOP) series which recently concluded at the Sheraton World Trade Center in Sao Paulo, and featured 36 featured events, attracted more than 20,000 players, and awarded more than US$2.7 million in prize money.
The BSOP main event subsequently drew a huge 2,749 players, making it the second-largest poker tournament ever held outside of Las Vegas, and emerging a top of the huge field was Brazilian player Wilson Calixto, who captured the title, and added the impressive R$1,050,000 ($US420,000) first place prize to his bankroll.
After the final table of eight had been reached, Wilson Calixto (4-4) eliminated Humberto Meireles (6-6) in 8th, before being dealt A-Q and doing likewise to Anderson Cruz (A-J) in 5th. Finally, Wilson Calixto made a straight on the turn to eliminate Lucas Iglesias (A-A) in 3rd, and so herald in the heads-up phase of the tournament against Luiz Duarte for the title.
As the final showdown commenced, Calixto held a slim lead over his remaining opponent, and eventually the deciding hand was played after Calixto was dealt J-5 to Duarte’s Q-3. Duarte subsequently moved all-in and was called on a 6-5-Q-J board, and with a harmless 7 falling on the river, Luiz Duarte finished the runner-up, while Wilson Calixto was crowned this year’s BSOP Millions Main Event champion.
