Mike Harris Wins Heartland Poker Tour Colorado Mike Harris has won the Heartland Poker Tour ‘Mile High Poker Open,’ after defeating a field of 739 players over six days on his way to taking down the title, and the $245,073 first place prize.
Following his impressive victory in Black Hawk, Colorado, the cattle rancher from Wyoming praised the organizers and said: “HPT puts on a top-notch tourney, the best in the world. HPT is a first-class operation, very well organized and well ran.”
The $1,600 Main Event was held at The Golden Gates Casino and attracted a large field of both poker pros and amateurs alike to create a prize pool worth $1,108,995. Amongst the big names in attendance at the event was David Baker, Greg “FossilMan” Raymer, and Bryan Devonshire, who eventually finished in 32nd place for $5,323.
By the time the tournament reached its six-seat final table, David Baker was still in contention and took his place alongside Wyoming’s Mike Harris and 4 other local Colorado players, including and chip leader Carla Sabini. However, despite being the most accomplished player at the final table, WSOP bracelet holder David Baker was the first to exit in 6th ($47,130), later commenting: “They are all wonderful players. It’s great to come to a city like Black Hawk where the players truly love poker.”
Baker was followed soon after by brick layer Jeff Wertepny in 5th ($58,220), who won his to the competition from an initial $240 outlay, and then finance professional Richard Perego in 4th ($73,302). After Dan Jensen exited in 3rd ($89,825), Mike Harris went heads-up against Carla Sabini, who was already guaranteed to become the  highest-earning woman in the 8 year history of the Heartland Poker Tour.
After a tough battle, Harris holding a set of fives was able to relegate Carla Sabini to a runner-up finish worth  $139,839, and complimenting his tough opponent said; “Carla’s one hell of a player.” Meanwhile, Mike Harris captured the Mile High Poker Open crown, as well as nearly one quarter of a million dollars in prize money.
