Matthew Shepsky Triumphs At 2015 HPT Golden Gates

Matthew Shepsky Triumphs At 2015 HPT Golden GatesA total of 721 players were attracted to the Heartland Poker Tour Golden Gates main event to create a prize pool worth $1,059,870, and five days later it would be Matthew Shepsky who emerged a top of the field to capture the title, as well as its $227,864 first place prize. Following his impressive performance, the Illinois resident now pushes his career earnings to $710,302.
The $1,650 Main Event was held at the Golden Gates Casino & Poker Parlour in Black Hawk, Colorado, and amongst the notable pros subsequently seeing a return on their buy-ins was Chris Tryba, Stan Jablonski, David Gutfreund, Kevin Eyster and Ross Bybee.
On the last day of the tournament, Matthew Shepsky entered the final table as one of the short stacks, but on the first hand doubled up with pocket kings against the pocket queens of Matt Bond. As Shepsky later explained:
“I thought if I got chips early I had a chance and then doubled up on the first hand – it was a roller coaster.”
Matthew Shepsky then managed to progress all the way through to five-handed play, when an interesting hand developed with him re-raising all-in holding 10-7 on a 10-8-2 flop. Danny Gonzales made the call with J-10, but a 7 then 3 on turn and river sealed his fate and so Gonzales exited in 5th palce for $46,634.
Next, Shepsky (J-10) eliminated a short-stacked Brandon Miller (6-4) in 3rd ($92,421), to take a 3-1 chip lead over Rex Clinkscales into heads-up play. The final phase was brief, though, and soon after Clinkscales (7d-5d) moved all-in on a Ks-10d-3h-8d-Ac board. Shepsky snap-called with pocket queens, and so Clinkscales had to settle for a runner-up finish worth $141,069, while Matthew Shepsky was crowned the champion.
“It was a tough table, those guys put on a real battle. I was lucky three-handed, picked up some chips and it worked out,” said Shepsky.
Final Table Results:
1 Matthew Shepsky $227,864
2 Rex Clinkscales $144,069
3 Brandon Miller $92,421
4 Garrett Patrick $63,910
5 Danny Gonzales $46,634
6 Rich Dixon $35,824
7 Victor Taggart $29,570
