Javier Zapatero Triumphs at Venetain Main Event for $561k
July 25, 2017 1:48 pmJavier Gomez Zapatero has won the Venetian $5,000 Main Event, after besting a field of 688 players over six days, including Paul Hoefer heads-up, to claim the title, and a first place prize worth $561,349. As a result of his latest victory, Zapatero now boosts his career earnings to $1,782,910, placing him at number 7 on Spain’s ‘All Time Money List’.
The $5,000 tournament featured a prize pool of $3,199,200, and amongst the recognizable pros finishing in one of its 72 money spots was David Rheem in 30th ($14,076), David Sands in 18th ($31,992), Sergio Aido in 16th ($31,992), Chris Tryba in 15th ($38,390), and Paul Volpe in 10th ($47,988).
Javier Gomez Zapatero then entered the final table as the chip leader, and by the time three-handed play had been reached, the players agreed a deal in which they received an amount based upon their chip counts, with a further $135,000 left over for the ultimate winner. Soon after, 2014 WSOP champion Martin Jacobson exited in 3rd for $398,303, leaving Javier Zapatero and Germany’s Paul Hoefer to battle it out for the title.
Following a back-and-forth heads-up encounter, Hoefer was eventually reduced to just 10bbs when the deciding hand was played with Hoefer moving all-in preflop holding Qs-3c, only to be called by Zapatero with a dominating Qh-Js. The dealer then laid out a 9h-5h-2h-6d-3h board to consign Hoefer to a runner-up finish, while Zapatero was crowned the Venetian Main Event winner.
