James Woods Triumphs At 2016 L.A. Poker Classic
February 23, 2016 2:30 pmJames Woods is one of Hollywood’s most supportive celebrities when it comes to poker, and has not only attended various tournaments over the years, but has also often spoken out in favor of online poker legislation in the US. The actor cashed in at his first tournament back in 2004, but earlier this month Woods scored one of the most impressive victories of his poker career.
The 68 year-old was in Southern California to attend the L.A. Poker Classic series at the Commerce Casino in Los Angeles, and one of the tournaments proved extra special for Woods, namely Event #37: $1,100 Omaha 8 or Better. A total of 88 players entered the event to create a prize pool worth $88,000, and by the end of the day Woods managed to best the field, including Mack Lee heads-up, to walk away with $21,065 in prize monies, but more importantly for Woods a tournament poker title, as well as a Remington Trophy memento.
That was not Woods’ only result at the two-month long L.A. Poker Classic, though, with his victory representing just one of six cashes at the series, although his next highest score was a 4th place finish at Event #22: $570 Stud for $2,600. Following his latest triumph, Woods now boasts $194,488 in live earnings, with his biggest score ever recorded back in 2006 also at the L.A. Poker Classic, after he finished the $10,000 Championship Event in 24th out of 692 entries for $39,859.
In addition to poker and his work as an actor/producer, James Woods also has a keen interest in politics, and unlike many of his fellow left-leaning Hollywood stars holds more conservative political views. Woods is not opposed to ruffling the feathers of his liberal opponents, either, and following the death of Antonin Scalia, the controversial conservative Associate Justice of the Supreme Court, Woods wrote:
“A bulwark against the rampant liberal assault on the Constitution. A great American.”
