Jake Skidmore Wins Europe's Biggest Ever Poker Tournament
September 6, 2013 2:30 pmThe 2013 Grosvenor UK Poker Tour (GUKPT) Goliath attracted a huge 2,570 players to the G Casino in Coventry, England, making it the biggest land-based poker tournament ever held in Europe.
After four days of action, 22-year-old UK player Jake Skidmore was then able to make his way past the massive field to lock up a £29,690 ($46,372) win (after a four-way deal was agreed), which is pretty impressive when one considers the tournament cost just £120 to enter.
Following his remarkable victory, Jake Skidmore commented: “A dream has become reality. It was a grueling 34 hours of poker, but I’m feeling great!”
Jake Skidmore’s triumph was all the more spectacular as he was reduced to just a single big blind on Day 3 before eventually making it all the way through to the final table. Nevertheless, as the GUKPT Goliath final table of nine got underway, Jiri Sladkovsky (18m) was way out in front as the chip leader, followed by Daniel Cullen (13.4m), but with Jake Skidmore in second to last spot on just a 3.33m stack.
Nevertheless, through a combination of good fortune and good play Jake Skidmore was able to accumulate chips before eventually getting to the heads-up phase of the competition against Jiri Sladkovsky. As the battle commenced, Skidmore held a huge chip lead and soon after Sladkovsky (K-Q) was all-in pre-flop and up against the A-10 of his opponent. Unfortunately for Sladkovsky, though, the Q-2-J-3 board subsequently produced a K on the river to make Jake Skidmore a straight and complete his famous victory.
