Isidre Beats Omar Sharif Heads-up To Win Deepstacks Poker Tour Barcelona
October 1, 2013 12:50 pmSpain’s Isidre Vivancos has won the inaugural Deepstacks Poker Tour Barcelona Main Event, after besting a small field of just thirty-three players on his way to capturing the title, and collecting the €19,000 first-place-prize.
For the first time in its history the DeepStacks Poker Tour (DSPT) had traveled across the Atlantic, and judging by the the meager turnout the next such venture may be some time off. Nevertheless, those players participating in the €1,500 re-buy event held at the Casino Barcelona, did at least have the experience of competing against DSPT ambassadors, such as Mike “The Mouth” Matusow, Michael “The Grinder” Mizrachi and Tristan “Cre8ive” Wade.
The first big name to then exit the tournament was Mizrachi, followed by Tristan Wade who disappointingly crashed out in 13th spot, later tweeting:
“A few big pots didn’t go my way then got my last 20bbs in QQ vs JJ and lost. GL to @themouthmatusow! #BarcelonaDSPT.”
However, despite being 3rd in chips with just 10 players remaining, Matusow was unable to press home his advantage and would eventually be eliminated just short of one of the five paid money spots. First of all, Matusow would lose a big pot holding pocket tens to his opponent’s K-K, before losing his remaining chips in a 6c-7c versus A-A final hand.
Poker pro Omar Sharif (not the actor) would subsequently take control of the game and eliminate the fourth and third placed players to take a substantial chip advantage over Isidre Vivancos into the heads-up battle. Nevertheless, local player Vivancos stood firm and was able to reverse his deficit before two-and-a-half hours of heads-up action later, managing to wrestle the title from his final opponent.
In addition to winning the €19,000 top prize, Isidre Vivancos was also awarded a seat at the $500,000 guaranteed DSPT Mohegan Sun World Championship in Connecticut come November.
