Daniel Smith Triumphs At Unibet Open Cannes For €88k
September 25, 2014 1:11 pmFrench poker player Daniel Smith has just won his biggest ever live score, after topping a 457 player field at the Unibet Open Cannes Main Event to claim the Unibet Open trophy, and take home the €88,000 (US$112,000) first place prize.
The €1,100 buy-in Main Event was held at the Casino Barriere Le Croisette on the French Riviera and after two opening flights, the final table of nine was reached within four hours of play on Day 2, with the remaining competitors then playing down to a final victor.
As the final table got underway, Michael Nielsen was the chip leader with more than four times the chips of Daniel Smith in 4th place. Nielsen (6-6) then proceeded to eliminate Dan Johansson (A-Q) in 8th for €11,200, before being dealt K-Q and doing likewise to Vinod Jadav (A-10) in 7th for €14,600.
Michael Nielsen (10-10) followed up by dispatching Davor Pavic (Q-3) to the rail in 4th (€30,000), and Alain Roy in 3rd (€40,000) to take a 11.2m to 2.48m chip lead against Daniel Smith into the final heads-up phase.
Right off the bat, Daniel Smith doubled up in an A-9 versus K-J encounter and half an hour later Smith had developed an 8.81m to 4.85m chip advantage over his opponent when the decisive hand was played. Daniel Smith (K-K) raised pre-flop from the small blind, and after Michael Nielsen (K-Q) re-raised to 945k, Smith four-bet to 2.2m, leading to Nielsen announcing he was all-in. Daniel Smith snap-called and after the dealer put out an A-6-7-4-5 board, Michael Nielsen finished the runner-up for €62,000 ($80,000), while Daniel Smith was crowned the 2014 Unibet Open Cannes Main Event champion.
