APPT Macau Main Event 2010 Won By Victorino Torres
May 24, 2010 6:35 amVictorino Torres has won the APPT Macau Main Event 2010, after defeating a field of 342 players over six days to take down the title and the HKD $3.2 million (US$416,000) first place prize.
Torres (33) comes from the Northern Mariana Islands in the Pacific, which have a population of less than 50,000 people, and only qualified for the HKD 40,000 ($5,160) buy-in APPT event after winning a $22 re-buy satellite on PokerStars.
After three days of Day 1 flights, 140 out of the 342 players remained. Day 2 saw that number further reduced to 44 and by the end of Day 3 all that remained were the nine final table competitors.
As the final table got underway, Torres was the second shortest stack but managed to build up his chips diligently as other players hit the rail. With just four players left, Torres then wrestled the chip lead from Chong Wing Cheong before knocking Jeppe Drivsholm from Denmark out in fourth ($891,000), to put himself firmly in contention for the title.
The final heads-up battle was eventually fought between Torres and Chong Cheong from Hong Kong with the defining hand coming after Cheong was dealt Qs-6c to Torres’ 8c-7c. With the flop falling Js-10h-9s, Torres checked his made straight and then moved over the top of Cheong’s overbet, which he then called.
The turn and river failed to improve Cheong’s hand and so he had to be content with his runner-up finish worth HKD 2,088,000 (US$267,630) while Torres clinched his biggest poker score to date of $3.2 million (US$416,000)
Commenting on his famous victory after, the clearly ecstatic trial lawyer said:
“My whole experience here in Macau has been exceptional to say the least…Of course I am elated to win. But more than that I am just very thankful. Thankful to my family and to PokerStars for putting on such a wonderful tournament here this week. Now I think I might just try my luck in Las Vegas at the World Series of Poker.”
