YouTube Gaming A Threat To Twitch?

YouTube Gaming A Threat To Twitch? Since going online in 2011, Twitch has grown to enjoy a virtual monopoly of the live streaming gaming arena, but the Amazon owned site’s dominance may soon be threatened after Google launched its own platform this week, called YouTube Gaming. Commenting on its launch, YouTube head of gaming, Ryan Wyatt explained:
“We wanted to create a one-stop shop for all gaming content. At the moment there is a fragmented experience. People go to different places for live content, and YouTube for video on demand. We have amazing gamers that don’t live stream yet. Now they have that opportunity.”
Up until now, Twitch has been the only viable live streaming platform as far as gamers are concerned, and each month receives 100 million unique views. Nevertheless, Twitch now faces stiff competition from YouTube, whose huge customer base has enabled gamers such as Sweden’s PewDiePie to attract almost 39 million subscribers. In terms of appeal, YouTube Gaming also seems to enjoy the advantage of using smoother functioning live streaming software, together with a more attractive interface.
Needless to say, YouTube Gaming’s launch should cause major concerns for Twitch as the platform could soon experience an erosion of its customer base, whilst the new platform can also take advantage of its sister site’s own enormous community. In terms of poker, YouTube Gaming says it has no intentions to enable live poker streaming in its initial service, suggesting it is more interested in first going after Twitch’s traditional video gaming market. This may encourage Twitch to specialize more in those areas that are not presently covered by YouTube Gaming, including poker, although that advantage may be short lived, too, as circumstances develop over time. As Ryan Wyatt explains:
“Establishing a new platform means it can skew the features to better suit gamers. Competitors such as Daily Motion and Twitch will continue to emerge and YouTube has to keep up.”
