After seven years as an 888poker ambassador, former international Australian cricketer Shane Warne has now parted ways with his sponsor, making the announcement via a message on twitter, which read:
“Sydney today for the test match, then Aussie Millions poker -exciting. FYI I’ve parted ways with 888… http://instagram.com/p/xcyxnpOAW6/
Shane Warne, 45, initially joined Team 888poker under a two-year agreement to represent the company at various poker events around the globe including the World Series of Poker, the 888 UK Poker Open and, of course, the Aussie Millions. While Warne’s tweet gives no indication as to the reason behind his departure, he obviously hasn’t lost his appetite for playing poker, and rumor has it he will be announcing a new sponsorship partnership soon. In fact, chances are the 45-year-old will be sporting a new patch when he sits down to play the 2015 Aussie Millions at the Crown Casino in Melbourne from January 14th.
Despite Shane Warne joining 888poker in 2008, the Aussie’s live poker tournament results have been less than stellar and he earned just $2,561 in 2009, $43,541 in 2010, $816 in 2013, and $24,611 in 2014, for total winnings of $71,528 over a seven-year period.
Warne’s most high-profile moment, however, came in 2014 at the $10k WSOP APAC Main Event, where with just 22 players left he had his A-K cracked by Victor Teng’s A-Q to exit the competition in 22nd for A$23,441. If his A-K had held up, Warne could have made it all the way to the final table, which would have attracted a huge amount of publicity from the Australian media. Unfortunately, that was not to be but one may still wonder how his poker career may have developed differently if it had.
