Poker Tweets: Hurricane Irma!

Poker Tweets: Hurricane Irma! After battering a number of Caribbean islands, the tropical cyclone known as Hurricane Irma devastated parts of Cuba before heading towards the state of Florida. Ahead of its approach, Florida’s state governor Rick Scott told residents to evacuate the danger areas, with shelters provided for those who decided to stay within the danger zone.
As a result, around 6.3 million people, representing over 25% of the state’s population, have now evacuated their properties. In the meantime, six million homes, or 62% of those in the entire state, are currently without power, with officials now warning of an impending “humanitarian crisis”. Despite all the chaos and confusion, however, Florida pro Jason Mercier and his pregnant wife Natasha took the risky decision to stay put, and as he tweeted on the 7th:
“I know everyone thinks I’m crazy. But my wife and I are going to be staying in south Florida during hurricane Irma. Half my family left…”
Needless to say, this prompted a slew of concerned responses from his friends and followers, including the following:
Danielle Andersen
“Man, I legit don’t understand this. There are things you gamble on & things you don’t. You’re a dad now. Kid falls in the ‘dont’ category.”
Bill Perkins
“All risk no reward …..the poker player way!!!!”
Doyle Brunson
“And what exactly are you trying to prove? Take your family and get out of there man!#yescrazy”
It seems like these and numerous other tweets highlighting the riskiness of his decision had a sobering effect on him, and the following day Mercier wrote:
“Changed our minds this morning. Traffic doesn’t look so bad now and we are headed north. Planning to stay in Orlando #PrayforSouthFlorida.”
Mercier then went on to describe how empty Interstate 95 in Florida was, before adding “The further north u are the better off you should be. Get out now while u still can.”
Looks like the wise and concerned words of his friends helped the Mercier family see sense in the end after all, thank goodness!
