Phil Laak Wins Party Poker World Open V
October 19, 2009 10:00 pmThe Party Poker World Open V has a new champion. Phil ‘The Unabomber’ Laak is the new champ taking home bragging rights and the $250,000 dollar prize.
The event started on Sunday, October 11th and finished up on Thursday, October 15th. Laak took out a lot of talent to win first place including Mike Sexton, andy Black and some of Party Poker’s Team member Bodo Sbrzesny and Jennifer Tilly.
Each player started out with 300,000 in chips and Laak lost almost all when he went down to 47,000 in chips but was able to make a come back and claim his seat at the final table. “Coming back from one and a half big blinds is about as crazy as it gets. So sick, just so sick,” said Laak.
The event has a new deep triple stack structure this year which meant that there was over 4 hours of play before the first elimination happened but eventually the tournament went heads up. Laak was up against Jan Veit who qualified for the tournament online. Veit took a heavy hit when Laak pushed in with A8 off suit and got an 8 on the flop beating Veit’s A4.
The final hand came when Laak raised with Q9 and Veit went all in with J7. Phil called his bet and won the hand taking home the tournament. Laak said, “his was a wild roller coaster ride and I am proud to have shared it with this amazing cast of characters. They were a tough bunch. Wow – what an honor”.
