Despite suffering a bad beat on the final hand of the final event of the 2023 Poker Masters, Stephen Chidwick claimed the event title and the illustrious Purple Jacket.

Heading into the final event of the 10-tournament series, a $50,000 No-Limit Hold’em tournament, Vladas Tamasauskas held the overall points lead in the series, but several players were within striking distance. Chidwick needed only a fourth-place finish or better to overtake Tamasauskas, which he was able to pull off.

In the final event it came down to Chidwick and Jonathan Jaffe heads-up. Trailing Jafee in chips by more than 3-to-1 Chidwick called a Jaffe three-bet all-in with As-9d. Jaffe revealed Ad-3h putting Chidwick well ahead in the hand. After the flop delivered Kd-7s-10d and the turn the 8s it looked like Chidwick was well on the way to doubling up. Instead, Jaffe hit the 3c on the river to give him the tournament win. Jafee cashed $756,000 while Chidwick had to settle for $504,000 for second place.

Chidwick finished the series with 688 points putting him well ahead of Tamasauskas with 566 points. In the 10-tournament series Chidwick recorded one win in a $25,000 No-Limit Hold’em event and posted second place, third place, and sixth place finishes. His total cash for his tournament play in the series was $1.1 million.

Along with the coveted Purple Jacket Chidwick also received $50,000 for winning the Poker Masters title. He joins previous Purple Jacket winners Steffen Sontheimer, Ali Imsirovic, Sam Soverel, Alexandros Kolonias, Eelis Parssinen, Michael Addamo, and Sean Winter.
