Joe Cada: Profile Of An Internet Poker Professional

Joseph “Joe” Cada gained fame recently when he became the youngest player ever to win the World Series Of Poker Main Event at the age of just 21. However, even before scooping the $8.55million first prize, Cada was already doing very nicely for himself as an online poker player.
Joe hails from Shelby Charter Township, Michigan and has been playing poker since the age of 15. He left community college after 2 semesters having won a “significant amount of money” over a long period of time and was even able to buy a 2,400-square foot house in cash aged 19.
“Poker is my life. College was always secondary,” Cada said. “I always planned on playing poker professionally. I had a lot of success playing before I went to college.”
In fact, between 2008 and entering the WSOP in 2009, Cada had won $551,788 from online tournaments alone but the volatile nature of the game saw him take a $150,000 downswing just before the tournament began and he only entered the tournament after professional poker financiers Eric Haber and Cliff Josephy made the shrewd investment of putting up his entrance fee in return for half his winnings.
Not surprisingly, Joe is a big supporter of internet poker, and in a recent interview with Time magazine said: “I support the right to play poker online. Poker isn’t gambling. It’s a hobby, an activity, a game. It’s not about luck — it’s about logic, decision-making, math. We all should be able to play poker on the Web if we want to, and I believe that making it illegal strips us of our rights. This is an important issue, and hopefully we’ll see it resolved soon.”
Cada is now based at PokerStars as a sponsored pro, and plays around 2,000 hands a day under the name ‘ jcada99′. Following the recent mega boost to his bankroll Cada said he was considering moving up cash game stakes to $50-$100 from his usual $25-$50. Joe said he also intends to learn other poker games to increase his chances of wining more WSOP bracelets. At this year’s WSOP, Cada managed to cash in three of the events, all of them in no-limit Texas hold ’em.
