$35k Roulette Wager Nets Gambler $1.225M
January 17, 2017 12:40 pmOn January 3rd, Brazilian businessman Pedro Grendene Bartelle and a group of friends celebrated the New Year by visiting the Conrad Punta del Este Resort and Casino Hotel in Uruguay. Their celebrations soon turned to jubilation, though, after Bartelle placed a huge $35,000 roulette bet on number 32, which was subsequently struck for an incredible $1,225,000.
A video recording which has since appeared in media outlets around the world captured the moment that the ball planted itself in the number 32 slot, and the wheel stopped spinning. Bartelle and his friends can then be seen dancing around in a group huddle, as other guests at the casino erupted into spontaneous applause.
While it may not represent a life-changing amount for the wealthy Brazilian businessman, it has at least provided him with a story for the gambling ages, as well as great deal of exposure across the world. After all, Pedro Grendene Bartelle is the nephew of Alexandre Grendene Bartelle, one of Brazil’s richest men with a fortune estimated to be around $1.4 billion.
Alexandre Grendene Bartelle made his fortune after founding Grendene, which has since grown to become one of the biggest manufacturer of sandals in the world. Pedro Bartelle has also followed in his family’s footsteps, and is currently the chairman of Vulcabras Azaleia, another footwear giant company that employs 35,000 people and generates around three-quarters of a billion dollars each year.
One of the most famous roulette stories, however, involves James Bond actor Sean Connery who in 1963 visited the Casino de la Vallee in Saint-Vincent in Italy. Connery then proceeded to win three consecutive times in a row on number 17, letting his winnings ride each time, to eventually leave the table with $27,000, worth around $213,000 in today’s money.
Then there is English gambler Ashley Revell, who in 2009 sold all his possessions for $135,300 and after visiting the Plaza Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas placed all his money on red, which he hit to double his money to $270,600.
