Phil Hellmuth Suffers Worst WSOP of Last Decade
July 15, 2016 11:55 amSince winning the 1989 WSOP Main Event for $755,000, Phil Hellmuth has gone on to amass an incredible 14 gold bracelets, including in 2012 taking down the WSOP Europe Main Event for €1,022,376 ($1,333,841). That year, Hellmuth also showed his versatility as a player by winning his first non-hold’em event, the $2,500 Seven-Card Razz event, and in 2015 he followed suit by capturing the $10,000 Seven-Card Razz event.
Hellmuth, however, failed to find any traction at any of the 69 events featured at this year’s WSOP, and in total earned just $67,098 for his efforts. After busting out of Event 68: $10k Main Event without reaching a money spot, Hellmuth tweeted:
“One of my worst @WSOP in the last 10 years. One final table, one 15th place, only 3 cashes and tons of “Close to cashes.” Blah.”
Hellmuth’s frustration was visible during the Main Event, and on his twitter account complained that he had never seen anyone “get 4bet or jammed on more today” than himself. At one stage, the “Poker Brat” even threw his iPhone across the room in exasperation, and in the end he got his last 37k in with A-J, only to be eliminated by Sara Hall holding J-J.
With just one event now remaining, the $1K Little One for One Drop, Hellmuth said he would now go all out to try and salvage his results at the 2016 WSOP, but unfortunately he has since been eliminated from that competition, too.
“If my reads were on, if my White Magic were perfect all the time, I’d have eight more bracelets, maybe 10 more bracelets, but on days where it’s not quite there you just have to adapt,” explained Hellmuth after his disappointing run.
Don’t feel too sorry for the 51 year-old pro, though, as he currently stands at number 7 on poker’s all-time money list with $20,977,294 in winnings, and earlier this year finished the $300k Super High Roller Bowl in 4th place for a $1.6 million payday.
