Maniac Bounces Phil Hellmuth From 2012 WSOP Main Event
July 9, 2012 1:20 pmIts been yet another impressive WSOP for Phil Hellmuth, after scooping his first gold bracelet since 2007 to extend his record haul to 12. Overall, the 47 year old pro cashed a total of 6 times including three final tables to take away $2,985,840 in prize money.
However, Saturday saw Phil Hellmuth’s 2012 WSOP come dramatically to an end after being bounced early from the $10k Main Event without even having first subjected the crowd to his usual theatrical entrance.
Rather than taming back his penchant for dressing up like legendary figures from history, such as Julius Caesar or General Patton, this time around Hellmuth’s understated decision seemed more opportunistic than anything else, and as he explained via twitter:
“Surprise, surprise (to me as well!), just sat in Day 1A of WSOP ME (Main Event)! Was playing Monday (1C), but Slept 14.5 hrs + hopped in.”
However, despite feeling fully recharged after his ‘Big One For One Drop’ 4th place finish for $2,645,333, Hellmuth didn’t get the sort of start he was looking for in the Main Event, and after a few hours of play, tweeted:
“10,500 left out of 30K starting stack in WSOP ME…Playing my game, but slightly frustrated! NOW time to MAN UP + make a deep run!”
Subsequently, things went from bad to worse for ‘The Poker Brat’ after tangling with a player he classified as a maniac and then before long Hellmuth found himself consigned to the rail. In what he later termed a run of “bad bad luck,” Hellmuth wrote:
I’m out of Main Event! Feeling tortured: Feeling sick…Maniac winning every pot w K-9 + Q-8, KNEW he would implode, BUT he busts me 1st.”
“Final hand: 900, maniac calls, I call w A-J + 6,500, flop Ac-10d-3c. Maniac (guy playing every pot like a madman) stunningly has 3-3, sick!”
Despite busting out earlier than expected, after overcoming his nausea Phil Hellmuth seemed to take it all in his stride. Not quite ready to leave Las Vegas just yet, Hellmuth apparently cleaned-up in a cash game against “Cantu and Harley” before later shooting a TV spot for EA Sports.
