Greg Merson On Heater Ahead Of 2102 WSOP Final Table
July 19, 2012 1:20 pmGreg Merson is a talented US pro who traveled to Canada after Black-Friday to continue his flourishing online career. As well as being a cash game specialist, the 25 year old has also proven himself to be a formidable tournament player as well, having earned $200,894 online as”gregy20723,” and a further $1,319,704 in the live arena.
Despite entering the 2012 WSOP Main Event final table in 3rd spot, Greg Merson will still be one of the favourites going into October’s $8.5 million showdown in Las Vegas. After all, it would seem Merson is on quite a heater with this being the Toronto resident’s third final table of the 2012 WSOP, which includes a victory at the $10k NL Six Handed event for $1,136,197.
An additional factor highlighting the momentum Greg Merson has enjoyed during the Main Event came on Day 5 when he found himself reduced to just 2 big blinds after losing a massive pot holding second pair and the nut flush draw against Fabrizio Gonzalez’s set.
“I was basically out of the tournament. I had to wait an hour and a half thinking I was just going to come back to bust out, because at that point you just don’t have enough chips to do anything,” explained Merson.
Fate had other plans in store for the young pro, however, who then managed to double up twice before eliminating a couple of other players to get his stack back up to average. The rest, as they say, is history and Greg Merson says he is now thankful for a break prior to the final table starting again in October, not least because of the eleven 14-hour days he grinded over two weeks to see out the series.
Nevertheless, Merson is appreciative of the golden opportunity afforded to him to cap off an already impressive 2012 WSOP and as he explains: “You never expect to be able to play a final table at this tournament because there’s just so many people. And if you play every year for the rest of your life, realistically, the odds are you’re just never going to be able to have this opportunity.”
