Argentina's Andres Korn Wins WSOP $5k NLHE Event
July 5, 2017 11:18 amAndres Korn has become only the second Argentinian player ever to win a WSOP bracelet, after taking down Event #56: $5,000 No-Limit Hold’em for $618,285. As a result of his impressive performance, Korn almost doubles his career earnings to $1,343,317, and commenting on what the huge payday meant to him, stated:
“The bracelet weighs so much more. I wasn’t even looking at the pay jumps; I was just focused on the bracelet. For us who play poker, this is the glory. And you don’t get that many chances to play for it. The money’s beautiful, but my main thing was the bracelet.”
The $5k NLHE event drew a field of 623 players to create a prize pool of $2,896,950. Amongst the top pros subsequently seeing a return on their money was Mustapha Kanit in 49th ($10,614), Aditya Agarwal in 31st ($14,183), Barny Boatman in 22nd ($16,889), Matt Affleck in 16th ($20,503), and Alan Engel in 13th ($25,365).
Andres Korn then entered the final table as the chip leader, and promptly added further to his stack by eliminating Sergio Cabrera in 9th, and Mark Zullo in 8th place. Continuing his steamroll, Korn sent Mike Sowers (5th), Marton Czuczor (4th), and Thomas Boivin to the rail to take a 2:1 chip advantage over Pete Chen into heads-up play.
After reducing his remaining opponent down to just 10bb, the deciding hand was then played with Korn moving all-in preflop with 9s-8s and Chen making the call with Kc-9d. With the dealer laying out a 9h-8d-5s-6s-6h board, the Argentinian claimed the victory, and commenting upon his experience of the tournament, stated:
