Australia's Sam Higgs Wins 2014 WSOP APAC Event #5

Australia's Sam Higgs Wins 2014 WSOP APAC Event #5Australia has been dominating this year’s World Series of Poker Asia-Pacific and after Sam Higgs took down Event #5 $5000 PLO, yesterday, the country has now won four bracelets from five tournaments played, with just five more events left in the series.
Sam Higgs also secured his victory in dramatic fashion, and having overcome a field of 80 people to reach the pot-limit Omaha event’s final table, the Aussie then had to power his way past a final table of six, which included the likes of Jonathan Duhamel and Mike Watson, to secure the bracelet, as well as the A$127,843 (US$111,381) first place prize. Following his remarkable win, Higgs commented:
“The money is awesome. You can’t ever complain about cash. But winning a bracelet is the ultimate prize. It was a tough field, but PLO is definitely my preferred game. I generally do well in these tournaments. I’m my most comfortable playing PLO no matter who it’s against.”
After the final table got underway, Canada’s Mike Watson proceeded to eliminate Ismael Bojang in 6th ($21,123), and Jeff Rossiter in 5th ($27,011), while Sam Higgs then took care of Jamie Pickering in 4th ($36,449), and Jonathan Duhamel in 3rd ($52,068) to usher in heads-up play between himself and Watson for the title.
At the beginning of heads-up play, Higgs held a 2-to-1 chip advantage over his final opponent, and eventually the deciding hand was played with Higgs (9d-8d-6c-4c) and Watson (Ks-Kc-7h-6d) all-in on a Qc-Js-5c-4d board. The 10s on the river subsequently made Higgs a queen-high straight to secure him the bracelet, while Watson had to be satisfied with a runner-up finish worth $79,099.
Commenting on the final hand of the tournament, Higgs said: “It was a tough call, he was short, and that’s why I had to call. I definitely had outs with the double gutshot and flush, so I just went for it. It feels awesome to win. As soon as that ten came down it was relief.”
Final Table Results:
1 Sam Higgs      $127,843
2 Mike Watson       $79,099
3 Jonathan Duhamel $52,068
