Jason "teamwispy" Helder Scoops $1m Prize At 2014 WRPS Main EventPoker pro Jason Helder has won the 2014 WinStar River Poker Series Main Event, after topping a 1,323 player field over three days to take home the huge $1 million prize, and boost his live tournament earnings to $1,324,243. Following his impressive victory, Helder was asked how he intended to spend the million dollars he had just won, to which he replied, “I don’t know yet. Winning is the hard part, spending is the easy part.”
The $2,500 buy-in Main Event attracted enough players to create a prize pool worth $3,178,375, and amongst the notable pros cashing in at the event was Christian Harder in 96th ($5,016), Scott Clements in 70th ($7,302), Brandon Steven in 68th ($7,302), Bryan Campanello in 21st ($19,051), Joseph Cheong in 13th ($26,989), and David Baker in 10th ($30,164).
After the final table of nine was reached, Jason Helder (A-K) proceeded to eliminate Rhett Trusler (J-J) in 9th for $42,891, before being dealt 10-10 and doing likewise to Chris Drake (A-K) in 4th for $134,096. Travis Rice (J-J) then eliminated WSOP bracelet winner Kevin Eyster (A-K) in 3rd ($219,088) to set up the heads-up phase of the competition.
However, the final battle was a quick affair and just three hands later the defining hand was played with Helder’s A-9 up against Rice’s A-4. With no help forthcoming from the board, Travis Rice had to settle for a runner-up finish worth $340,403, while Jason Helder was crowned the champion.
Commenting later on his impressive victory, Helder, said: “It’s my biggest score by five times, ever. Having position on Travis Rice and Kevin Eyster was huge for me. I didn’t make any big mistakes and chipped up early.”
