Tony G Begins 5 Year Term As Member Of European Parliament
May 27, 2014 12:43 pmLithuanian-Australian business entrepreneur and poker professional Antanas “Tony G” Guoga can now add yet another title to his impressive CV, that of member of the European Parliament. At the weekend, the 40 year-old pro-European Liberal Party candidate was one of 15 MEPs from Lithuania to be elected to the European Parliament, where he can now represent his country’s higher political priorities over the course of his 5 year term, and of course, be a voice in favour of poker.
Following his remarkable achievement, Tony G commented: “Today we made history in Lithuanian politics. For the first time Liberals have won two seats in the European Parliament. My sincere thanks go to all the voters, those who supported and helped me along the way!”
In addition to owning media outlet PokerNews, online gambling site TonyBet Poker, and being a poker pro with tournament earnings of $4,862,341, the wealthy businessman with a personal fortune estimated at €25 million ($36.7) also finds time to perform his duties as the vice-president of the Lithuanian Basketball Federation, in between carrying out his many charitable works.
Nevertheless, some time ago Tony G signaled he was keen to be able to influence policy in Lithuania, and at one time compared politics to a poker game, explaining that “a competition, a tournament or as a sit-n-go..We are all playing. Every country is playing and whoever plays the smartest, is going to be successful.”
Tony G will now have ample opportunity to represent the wider interests of his country, and also be a positive voice for online poker regulation, in his new €8,000+ euros per month job. Not surprisingly, Tony G’s new venture into the world of European politics was immediately celebrated by many of his fellow poker peers and people associated with the industry. Consequently, Tony G’s Facebook and Twitter accounts were inundated with messages of support and congratulations. One such message was left by Partypoker.bwin’s Head of Consumer Public Relations Warren Lush, who simply tweeted:
“Tony G @tonyguoga has been elected to the European Parliament! Tony G MEP #history.”
