Tom McEvoy's WSOP Bracelet Sells for $15k
January 19, 2017 5:12 pmOn Wednesday, Tom McEvoy’s 1983 WSOP Main Event bracelet sold on auction site eBay for $15,000, with the package offer also including a range of other goodies, including three signed books authored by the pro, and a one hour private poker lesson in Las Vegas.
When Tom McEvoy won the 14th WSOP Main Event more than three decades ago, he beat a field of 108 players to claim the title, as well as a first place prize worth $540,000. At the same Series, McEvoy also overcame 234 players at the $1k Limit Hold’em event for $117,000, and over his illustrious career the player has amassed a total of $3,024,847, and 4 WSOP bracelets.
While he still competes at various poker tournaments, Tom McEvoy has scaled back on the amount of time he spends playing the game these days, with his last six-figure year back in 2005 when he won a total of $316,802. McEvoy’s most recent cash was at the 2016 WSOP main Event where he finished in 644th place for $18,714.
The 72-year-old now describes himself as a semi-retired pro, and during an interview in 2014 he stated that he doesn’t travel much anymore, explaining:
“I used to be on the road five months out of the year, but that is not the case anymore. I have a wife, a stepson, a dog, a cat and two birds that all like having me around. So I’m more of a homebody than I was because I’m older.”
Over the years, McEvoy has authored more than a dozen poker books, and has had numerous articles published by CardPlayer Magazine. In 1998, the staunch anti-smoker also helped organize the first poker tournament where smoking was prohibited.
McEvoy now joins an expanding list of WSOP Main Event winners to have sold their championship bracelets, including Jamie Gold (2006), Jerry Yang (2007), and Peter Eastgate (2008), with all the $147,500 the Dane raised subsequently going to charity.
