Isildur1 Beats Tony G In SuperStar Showdown
January 3, 2011 9:39 amThe much anticipated heads-up match between Isildur1 and Tony G was finally played out on PokerStars last night, and by the time the dust had settled Isildur1 emerged the victor by $44,820.
Going into yesterday’s match there was talk of a Tony G having an axe to grind with his young Swedish opponent after previously agreeing to be staked by Tony G at the televised Big Game IV but then pulling out of the show at the last minute.
Although good for the pre-match hype, the 37 year-old Tony G was always going to face a tough battle against an opponent skilled in online multi-tabling, unlike the G-man himself. Prior to the duo beginning their 2,500 hands of $50/$100 NL and PLO split between four tables, Tony G even wrote on his blog:
“I am a massive underdog, probably the biggest underdog ever. I’ll be playing under conditions that don’t suit me well and I am an old man after all. All I have going for me is heart and commitment. Let’s hope that is enough to at least put up a fight.”
An incredible fight Tony G certainly did put up, even though the match did develop into a massive 7.5 hour epic with Tony G timing out several times during the session, as well as taking regular breaks.
Around about an hour into the match, Tony G had managed to procure a $63,000 advantage over Isildur1, helped along by winning a $49,300 pot. However, by the 1000 hand mark things had turned around badly for Tony G who lost three pots in short order to then find himself in the red by $2,450.
As the half-way mark approached, Isildur1 managed to extend his overall lead to around $77,000 but by the time the marathon session was finally over Isildur1 had secured a $44,820 profit to win the PokerStars SuperStar Showdown. Amazingly all but $500 of that profit came from the two PLO tables played.
The good hearted match ended with the following conversation:
Isildur1: Gg, nice playing with u
Isildur1: u really did have heart
Isildur1: so close
Isildur1: cu guys
Tony G: all over
Tony G: I have been humiliated
Tony G: well done
Tony G: let me go and look for my bike
The match was watched and enjoyed by an army of rail-birds, who have already turned their attention to speculating who Isildur1’s next challenger may be.
