Dwan Over $1 Million Ahead In 'durrrr Challenge'
February 1, 2010 10:06 amAround a year after beginning their challenge, Tom Dwan and Patrik Antonius played a further 2,112 hands against each other to progress 63% of the way through the ‘durrrr Challenge’ and extend Dwan’s lead to over $1 million.
Patrik Antonius has been playing catch-up a great deal during their competition and the first of their two sessions didn’t do much to narrow the gap, as he managed to claw back just $6,000 over 1,230 hands to go around $900,000 behind.
The second of their sessions was a lot shorter and sweeter, for Tom Dwan that is, as he managed to add $199,442 to his lead after only 892 hands and now is $1,077,932 ahead of his Finnish opponent. He has also got the better of Antonius in seven of their last eight challenge encounters.
The biggest pot of the night was worth $192,830 and occurred when Antonius made a standard raise to $1,200 holding Ac Kc Qc Qc, and was three-bet to $3,600 by Dwan holding Js 8s 6d 5d. Antonius made the call and hit top pair when the flop came As 9c 7s although Dwan now had both a straight and a flush draw. Dwan then check raised Antonius’ $6,000 bet to $22,200, who made the call and a Qh on the turn gave Antonius two pair while missing Dwan completely. Not that it made any difference to Dwan who pushed all-in on the turn for $51,600, was raised to $70,615 and called the remaining balace. A 5h on the river completed Dwan’s straight and had an agonised Antonius rebuying for more chips.
With 18,000 hands left to play out of the 50,000 hand requirement of the ‘durrrr Challenge,’ Antonius has a difficult but not insurmountable task ahead of him if he is to avoid defeat and owing Dwan a further $500,000 on top of his losses.
