Online poker players located in the province of Ontario will have access to the newly launched WSOP.ca starting on April 4 as part of the new private iGaming expansion in the province. How does WSOP.ca launch in Ontario affect GGPoker?
The WSOP.ca site will continue to use GGPoker software. One downside to the launch of WSOP.ca in Ontario is that former GGPoker players and anyone playing on WSOP.ca will be limited to in-province competition. Ontario is currently ring-fenced and has not created any player liquidity sharing compacts to share player pools with any other provinces or American states.
This could limit the number of players available for cash games and tournaments early on.
This ring-fenced problem has also come up in other parts of the iGaming industry in Ontario. For example, FanDuel is shutting down all their daily fantasy sports contest in Ontario because under new Ontario iGaming regulations they can not enter Ontario residents in contest that will include players from outside Ontario.
It’s possible that the addition of the WSOP brand to the Ontario market could allow residents in the province to play for WSOP Circuit rings and WSOP bracelets in the future. The 2022 World Series of Poker, which starts up on May 31 will have WSOP online bracelet events in Nevada, New Jersey and Pennsylvania.
Players who registered with WSOP.ca will have access to launch promotions and bonuses, and automatically be enrolled in the Caesars Rewards loyalty program.
