Uruguay Striker Luis Suarez Becomes 888poker Ambassador
May 14, 2014 2:27 pmAhead of this year’s World Cup in Brazil taking place between 12th June and 13th July, 888poker has announced its newest brand ambassador will be none other than the 2014 Professional Footballer’s Association Player of the Year, Luis Suarez.
The 27 year-old Uruguayan striker played for Ajax Amsterdam before being transferred to Liverpool for £22.8 million in 2011. This season Suarez subsequently scored 31 times for Liverpool, with the UK club only just missing out on a Premiership title to this year’s winners Manchester City.
888poker is currently ranked as the second most popular online poker site in the world with 2,200 cash game players over a seven-day period, behind online poker monopoly PokerStars with 20 thousand players. With the UK Premiership season finishing last week and the 2014 FIFA World Cup starting next month, Luis Suarez will now take up his new responsibilities as a member of Team 888poker and can be seen representing the site at both online and live poker events.
Commenting on its newest Team 888poker brand ambassador, Senior Vice President of 888, Itai Pazner, commented: “Luis Suarez is an incredible sporting talent; passionate, competitive, technically gifted, and emotionally invested in the game. It’s those qualities that make him an exciting player to watch, in poker as well as football. It’s fantastic to have him on board.”
Suarez now joins a number of other sporting celebrities representing 888poker, including Australian cricket legend Shane Warne and UFC champion Georges St-Pierre. Suarez also stands to benefit from the poker expertise of 888 sponsored pros JC Tran, Sofia Lovgren, and Xuan Liu.
Interestingly, the 45th Annual World Series of Poker in Las Vegas is taking place from May 27th to July 14th, a date which overlaps with the 2014 FIFA World Cup taking place in Brazil. Therefore, it seems unlikely that Luis Suarez will be taking part in the showcase tournament series, although it is possible his national team Uruguay may have been eliminated from the competition by then.
Uruguay won the first ever Soccer World Cup in 1930, repeating its success two decades later in 1950. This time around, however, Uruguay finds itself in a tough Group D, which includes Italy, England, and Costa Rica.
