Tom Dwan Wins Record Breaking $1.1 Million Televised Pot
September 21, 2009 8:32 amSeason 4 of Full Tilt Poker’s Million Dollar Cash Game has just been recorded and has already produced the biggest pot in television history between two of the game’s stars.
Many high profile professionals were in London playing at the Full Tilt event which completed just prior to the 2009 WSOP Europe getting underway last week. The cash game was certain to produce sparks with a top class line up which included Tom “durrrr” Dwan, Phil Ivey, Chris Ferguson, Gus Hansen, Mike Matusow, Allen Cunningham, and Patrik Antonius.
The invitation only event had a $100k minimum buy-in and it wasn’t long before a $500,000 pot was produced after Dwan woke up with pocket AA while Antonius held KK. With all the money going in pre-flop Dwan must have been feeling confident as a more than 80% favourite to win the hand but a K on the flop saw the chips all getting shipped Antonius’s way.
Dwan was able to recoup his loses against Cyril Mouly but then got involved in the $1.1 million pot with Ivey when the game started to break up after 20 hours of play. James Hopkins, Managing Director of Emblaze Productions, said “After almost 20 hours of play, other players stepped aside as the Million Dollar Cash Game turned shorthanded. Three of the world’s elite players; Phil Ivey, Patrik Antonius and Tom Dwan, started playing blinds of US$1k, US$2. It was great to watch.”
Dwan raised with 6h-7h and was re-raised by Phil Ivey from the small blind holding Ac-2h, Antonius stepped aside and Dwan called. The pot was already at $60k when the flop came Qc-3d-5c giving both players a gut shot straight draw. Ivey’s $40k bet was called by Dwan, but when the 4h fell on the turn both players had made their hands but Dwan held the nut straight.
Ivey’s turn bet was then raised to $240k, and after a couple of minutes of serious deliberation Ivey finally announced all in which was immediately called by Dwan who revealed his unbeatable holding thus making him the winner of the biggest pot in television history. The $1.1 million pot beats the previous televised record of $919,600 which coincidentally was also won by Dwan when his Ks-Qs hit trip Queens on the turn to beat Barry Greenstein’s pocket Aces during a High Stakes Poker Season 5 episode.
Full Tilt Poker’s Million Dollar Cash Game can be seen in the UK on Sky Sports in January 2010.
