Global Poker League To Resume on September 20th
September 16, 2016 11:13 amAfter taking a break on July 8th , the second half of season 1 of the Global Poker League is scheduled to get underway on September 20th. Despite his grand ambition to help sportify poker, Alex Dreyfus’s creation has instead attracted a fair amount of criticism from players and fans alike.
Even the French entrepreneur himself acknowledged that Season 1 would be a bit of a learning process, and ahead of the GPL’s resumption Dreyfus has now announced a series of changes designed to make the competition a lot more interesting. One such innovation is the release of a mobile app for iOS and Android devices, which will help fans better connect to the action by providing match updates, news, stats, and videos of the games.
The competition will also stimulate further interest in its coverage by replacing GPL commentator Griffin Benger with a “rotating cast of poker experts,” including Jonathan Little. The decision was made after Benger decided to leave his commentary position in order to concentrate on improving his chances at this year’s WSOP Main Event final table. At the end of October, the Canadian pro will start his push for WSOP glory in 7th place out of the nine remaining finalists, and after announcing his withdrawal from the GPL commentary team, Benger heaped praised on the competition by stating that it offered an invaluable means by which recreational players could gain a greater insight into poker. As he said:
“It is the best learning tool; it’s not even close to anything you can find on the Internet.”
Another change involves the location of venues, with the GPL Playoffs and Finals now taking place in Las Vegas, instead of at TwitchCon 2016 in San Diego.
