Helping Maryland’s results along was the introduction of live table games in April, as well as the opening of the Rocky Gap casino on May 22, 2013. However, excluding Rocky Gap Casino Resort, Maryland’s three other casinos consisting of Maryland Live, Hollywood Casino Perryville and Casino at Ocean Downs, actually generated 38% more revenue last month than they did in December 2012.
Leading the way in terms of growth was the state’s biggest gaming venue, Maryland Live, whose 4,341 slot machines and 174 table games, generated $52.5 million in revenue, up 46% from December 2012. The Arundel Mills based casino also accounted for around 80% of Maryland’s gambling revenue for the month.
Next, Hollywood Casino Perryville, generated about $6.5 million from its 1,158 slot machines and 22 table games, a 9% improvement from December 2012; while revenue at Ocean Downs climbed by 1.6% to about $3.4 million in December. Finally, Rocky Gap Casino Resort, with 558 slot machines and 13 table games, generated $2.6 million for the month.
For 2013 as a whole, Maryland’s four casinos raked in around $750 million in gaming revenue, $586 million of which was generated by the state’s largest casino Maryland Live. Commenting on the casino’s impressive performance, Maryland Live’s president Rob Norton, said: “We’re very pleased with our performance. The addition of live action tables and poker has been very exciting for the property from an experience and revenue standpoint, while slots showed steady growth through the year, even with the addition of tables.”
In total, Maryland collected a total of $415 million in state taxes throughout the year, with $315 million of that sum going towards the Education Trust Fund.
