Maryland Casino Revenues Up 10% To $76m In May
June 6, 2014 1:54 pmThe Maryland Lottery and Gaming Control Agency has released its casino figures for May, revealing a 10% increase in gross gambling revenues to $75.8 million, compared to the $69.2 million generated in May 2012.
From Maryland’s four casinos, Maryland Live in Arundel Mills continues to be light-years ahead of the competition, and in May saw its revenues increase by 8.1% to $59.5 million. The casino operates 4,204 slots and 189 table games, and last month accounted for 80% of the state’s total revenues.
Maryland Live’s results helped make up for losses reported elsewhere around the state, the biggest faller of which was Hollywood Casino Perryville, down 8.7% to $7.8 million in May. As a result the casino’s 1,158 slot machines and 22 table games raked in $748,272 less revenues than the same month last year.
Likewise, the Casino at Ocean Downs with its 800 slot machines generated 1.2% less revenues at $4.7 million.
Rocky Gap Casino Resort in Allegany County, however, only opened on May 22nd, 2013, and so no yearly comparison is available. Nevertheless, the casino with its 577 slots and 16 table games pulled in $3.8 million in May, which was lower than the nearly $4 million it took in April.
Overall, the Free State’s casino industry continues to be in great shape with further expansion planned soon as the new Horseshoe Casino opens in downtown Baltimore come September, and the MGM National Harbor in Prince George’s County in 2016.
The impressive performance of Maryland’s casino industry is also reflected in a recent US gaming industry report released for 2013, which showed Maryland reported a 98.2% increase in gaming revenue throughout the year, second only to Ohio which improved by 149.1%. Much of the growth experienced by Maryland in 2013 came as a result of the state’s legalization and introduction of table games.
In total, the US casino industry generated $66.3 billion last year, up 1.6% compared to 2012, with Nevada dominating the industry collecting $11.14 billion in revenues.
