Casino Mogul Sues Jewish Group Over Prostitution Claims
August 9, 2012 11:35 amAmerican business magnate and CEO of Las Vegas Sands Corporation, Sheldon Adelson, 79, has filed a $60 million defamation lawsuit against the National Jewish Democratic Council (NJDC) for asserting he was involved in promoting prostitution at his resorts.
The prostitution allegations first surfaced in 2010 after former president of Sands China Ltd Steven Jacobs brought a wrongful termination lawsuit against his employer, claiming to have seen documents proving Adelson personally endorsed a “prostitution strategy.” The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee then jumped on the bandwagon, but later distanced themselves from their earlier comments issuing an apology saying that; “The statements were untrue and unfair, and we retract them.”
As well as taking issue with the NJDC’s claim Adelson personally profited from prostitution at his Macau resorts, the world’s 14th richest man with an estimated wealth of $25 billion saw political motives behind the NJDC’s accusations. Sheldon Adelson is a huge contributor to the Republican party and said he was prepared to donate up to $100 million to ensure President Obama is not re-elected. Therefore, Adelson’s lawsuit is claiming that the Jewish organization were attempting:
“to advance their perceived political interests by assassinating Mr. Adelson’s character, punishing him for exercising his right to make monetary contributions to political causes and candidates of his choice, and demeaning him within the Jewish community.”
Sheldon Adelson, himself, is the son of a Jewish immigrant, and the current owner of Israeli daily newspaper Israel HaYom. He is also a huge contributor to charitable causes, particularly promoting Jewish causes. Pointing out the irony of the situation, Ed Lasky is quoted as saying on American Thinker:
“It is an age-old anti-Semitic trope that Jews use money to control governments and that claiming a Jewish casino Mogul who is behind prostitution is doing so is just promoting anti-semitism on multiple levels.”
