American Express Poker Sites

Everything You Need to Know About Amex US Poker

American Express, shortened by many to Amex, is one of the most popular credit cards in the world – third after Mastercard and Visa. Even so, most online poker sites have yet to offer Amex as an option for deposits and withdrawals for reasons that remain unclear to this day.

In general, online poker sites do cater to a global clientele, meaning the payment options offered should be accessible to all and widely used. American Express is a global company, but since it is not as widely-used as Visa and Mastercard, poker operators tend to stay away from Amex as a third option. This displeases some customers, but most of them have an alternative way to fund an online account, either by Visa or Mastercard or via some other type of digital wallet.

When you find a site that does offer Amex as an option, however, it’s a great one because of the lack of fees associated with online financial transactions. Record-keeping is simple, and the card comes with built-in protections against fraud and identity theft.

Amex users tend to be quite loyal to their cards and use them whenever possible, but they may have to use another card when funding most online accounts and playing poker for real money.

Does My Favorite Poker Site Accept Amex?

Unfortunately, most poker sites do not yet accept American Express for deposits or withdrawals. Even sites that are licensed and regulated in the United States, such as PokerStars in New Jersey, are not yet accepting Amex for payments. Intertops is one of the few that does accept it for deposit only, which makes it quite appealing for Amex users.

A good way to help change the minds of poker operators is to tell a customer service representative that Amex is a preferred method of payment and would make a different in obtaining future business. Companies do listen to suggestions such as this, especially when they pertain to money.

Advantages of Using Amex

  • No fees are associated with deposits or withdrawals.
  • Credit cards offer the safety and security of direct transfers directly to the site.
  • Deposits are immediate, with no intermediary like an ewallet necessary.
  • Records of transactions are easy to obtain.
  • Company protects customers against credit card theft.

We check the top online poker sites for Amex options regularly in the hopes that more sites will allow it. In the meantime, the following are the only options for deposits into online poker accounts at this time.

Who is Amex?

As a company, American Express was founded in 1850 in New York and remains headquartered there to this day. The multinational financial services company started with local express mail and then moved into money orders, not issuing letters of credit until the late 1880s. Soon after, the company developed the Traveler’s Cheque, which is rarely used today but was quite popular for many decades. (The slogan was, “Don’t leave home without them.”)

Credit cards weren’t considered by Amex until after Diners Club launched one in 1950, and the American Express card was introduced in 1958. It added perks to frequent-purchasers by offering a Gold Card in the 1960s and then a Platinum Card in the 1980s.

American Express never became as internationally popular as Visa or Mastercard, but recent efforts have linked the company with new technology so as to connect with Google and Apple mobile ewallets. Amex is still quite popular due to the lack of fees charged and a rewards system. The company was worth more than $32 billion in 2016.

Is American Express Safe to Use for Poker?

Credit cards companies like Amex go to great lengths to protect their customers’ funds and personal information. Fraud detection monitoring is always in use to immediately flag any suspicious activity, put a stop on the card, and contact the customer to inquire about the purchase. This, along with standard encryption and protection services, makes the credit card one of the safest options for poker online.

Responsible gambling practices also work well with Amex, as customers have the ability to block payments to online poker sites or request reporting to monitor activity.

Does Amex Offer Poker Deposits and Withdrawals?

Poker players will find a few select online poker sites that allow the use of Amex for deposits, which are processed immediately. Withdrawals are not allowed via Amex, however, and it is unclear if that will change in the near future.

Does Amex Charge Fees?

There are no fees for using Amex to deposit to a poker account online. Amex is known for its lack of fees.

How Long Do Deposits and Withdrawals Take?

Deposits using Amex are usually processed immediately. While some sites require a credit card authorization form to be completed, signed, and submitted, this is only to protect the customer and allow the poker operator to verify with Amex that the payment is authorized. This is yet another level of protection offered by Amex and other credit cards.

Again, however, withdrawals are typically not allowed via Amex.

Is it Easy to Open an Account?

Opening an Amex account is no more difficult than opening any other charge account. A customer’s credit is checked, and if that credit score is sufficient, the card will be issued. A card can be issued very quickly, but any credit issues can delay the process.

Customers wanting an Amex card will have to provide basic information, like a social security number and employment information, all of which is standard to obtain a credit card of any kind. Amex will then determine the person’s credit limit and accessibility of funds before issuing the card.

When registering to use Amex with an online poker site, there may be a credit card authorization form to complete, but that often takes just a few minutes. There may be a short waiting period while the poker operator verifies the information with American Express, but the deposit is usually authorized very quickly after the payment method is approved.
