As mentioned above there are three solutions available if your trying to play poker using your Linux. Below is a more detailed explanation of each method however we do suggest you test the poker room software out first before using the WINE method or a dual boot.
Poker on a Linux – Instant Play / Java Applet
Most of the poker rooms these days provide players with two options to access their client. The Windows based program, which of course won’t work using a Linux (unless you use one of the methods below) or the Instant Play program which operates using a Java applet. The Java client allows you instant access to the poker room using your internet browser. You will need to have Java installed first before you can begin playing. The software is similar however not all of the Linux poker sites include the same features and functions the Windows version provides.
Using Wine to Play Poker on a Linux
WINE is a free software program which allows Linux players to operate Windows based programs on your Linux. Although WINE provides you with a work around for playing online poker, some users have experienced a diminished level in quality when comparing it to the instant play version with complaints of sound issues or lack of features. If you experience any of these issues we suggest you check one of the Linux poker sites listed above or you can opt to play at Pokerstars which has the best Linux compatible poker room.
How to Install WINE
To play poker using WINE you will need to download the free WINE software . From there you will need to go through the installation setup using WINE Tools which includes setting up the Windows system programs in addition to the TrueType core fonts. Once installed, WINE should automatically launch and you can choose one of the Linux poker sites above to begin downloading their software. After you click the download link a popup will appear asking you if you would like to save the file. As an example if you download Pokerstars your popup should say “PokerStarsInstaller.exe”. Once the file has been saved, you will need to run command to begin the installation process (/tmp/PokerStarsInstaller.exe). From here click the next button until the installation is complete at which point you will need to reboot WINE...and that’s it! Your now set to play poker on a Linux.
Dual Booting your Linux to Play Poker Online
The last option available for Linux players is of course a dual boot. A dual boot allows you to operate both Windows and Linux on your computer giving you the best of both worlds. That said there are some obvious downfalls to dual booting with the biggest being a loss of files. Because of this, we strongly advise you to backup your computer before attempting to install Windows on your Linux.
